Safe Disposal of Unused/Leftover Prescription Drugs

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana partners with Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators and law enforcement offices throughout the state to install drug drop boxes.

These boxes are a secure, anonymous way for people to safely get rid of unused, expired or leftover prescription medication, which can prevent it from being stolen or misused.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), America is in an opioid epidemic. And, almost half of opioid overdose deaths happen to someone who is taking these drugs by prescription for pain relief – drugs like OxyContin®, Vicodin®, Percocet® and morphine.

Safely disposing of unused or leftover opioids or other prescription drugs can lower risks of abuse or misuse and keep these drugs from falling into the wrong hands.

Prescription Drug Safety
Here are some steps you can take for prescription drug safety:

  • Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s directions when taking a prescription drug.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are worried about possible side effects of a drug, including addiction.
  • Never take a drug prescribed for someone else or give your prescribed drugs to others.
  • When you no longer need a drug, get rid of leftover pills safely so they aren’t stolen or misused. You can use the secure drug drop boxes for this.
