Contraceptive (Birth Control) Coverage

A contraceptive, or birth control, drug or method helps prevent pregnancy.

Most Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana and HMO Louisiana, Inc. plans include contraceptive care options. Many plans cover certain contraceptive care prescribed for women with reproductive capacity for $0 out of pocket (no deductible, copay or coinsurance costs) when obtained in network. (If you get those contraceptive care options out of network, you may pay out of pocket.)

Call Customer Service at the number on your ID card to ask how your plan may cover contraceptive care.

Find Covered Prescription Contraceptive Drugs:

  • Search the Covered Drug List that goes with your health plan at bcbsla.com/CoveredDrugs. Just click on “Contraceptives” from the table of contents to find a list of drugs covered under our plans or look up drugs by name in the index.
  • Log in to your bcbsla.com account and click Pharmacy. Use your Pharmacy Dashboard to look up a drug name for coverage details and options from our pharmacy benefit manager.
  • Call the Pharmacy number on your ID card to ask about contraceptive drug coverage under your plan.
  • If you don’t have pharmacy benefits through Blue Cross, please contact your plan’s pharmacy benefit manager.

If you need a drug that is not on the Covered Drug List, ask your doctor to request an exception or prior authorization for your drug to be covered. Your doctor can find the necessary Drug Authorization & Formulary Exception form and contact information here.

If your drug is not already provided for $0, you or your doctor can request a $0 copay for that drug if it meets clinical criteria. You may call the Pharmacy number on your ID card, or your provider may call 1-800-842-2015 to make this request.
